College Football 27 has taken three title updates. Title Update 3 landed August 6 and it is the one that changes how you have to play: untargeting no longer works on run plays, the formation shift personnel exploit is closed, pancake blocking finally came down, and match coverage got a top-to-bottom logic pass. EA also published its own list of what is still broken, which is a first this cycle. Here is every change, what each one means competitively, and what is still not fixed.

The 20-second read: Title Update 3 (August 6) takes tools away rather than just fixing bugs. Untarget User Defender no longer works on run plays. The formation shift trick that produced four and five receiver sets out of heavy personnel is closed. Pancake blocking came down after surviving two patches. Defenders win more jump balls, continuing the July 23 anti aggressive-catch trend. Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 Palms and Cover 4 Quarters all got logic fixes, plus twelve new Press Quarters plays and three new 3-3-5 Odd Ghost blitzes. Still broken, per EA: speed boosting, the slot DB flip bug, man coverage effectiveness, hurry up resetting custom adjustments, coverage shells, and hot routes against specific checks. We update this page every time a patch drops.

Title Update 3 (August 6): The Patch That Changes How You Have To Play

Title Update 3 shipped Thursday, August 6, and it is the biggest update College Football 27 has taken. The first two patches fixed bugs. This one takes tools away. Untargeting no longer works on run plays, the formation shift exploit is closed, and match coverage got a top-to-bottom logic pass. If you play head to head, three or four things you did last week do not work the same way today.

Untargeting No Longer Works on Run Plays

Gameplay
Nerfed Aug 6

This is the headline change and EA buried it in the coaching adjustment section. The Untarget User Defender coaching adjustment will no longer apply on run plays. EA also fixed two related holes in the same pass: untargeting now works correctly with blitz shows, and it no longer carries over when you are controlling a defensive lineman.

What it means for you: Untargeting your user defender so the offense could not read your assignment was one of the cheapest edges in the game, and against the run it was close to free. That is gone. You now have to actually fit the run with the defender you are controlling instead of hiding him. Expect a real jump in run success against players who leaned on it, and expect the good defensive users to adjust within a week. If your defensive scheme was built around untargeting on early downs, it needs a rebuild.

The Formation Shift Exploit Is Closed

Gameplay
Fixed Aug 6

Formation shift could produce four and five receiver sets out of heavy personnel, which meant you could show a run look and end up in an empty spread without the defense ever getting the personnel it was owed. That is fixed.

What it means for you: Personnel now means what it says. The mismatch offenses that lived on shifting into a spread out of a heavy set lose their best trick, and defenses that were guessing wrong on personnel get an honest look again. This one had been on our still-broken list since launch.

Pancake Blocking Finally Came Down

Gameplay
Fixed Aug 6

EA reduced pancake block frequency through a coaching adjustment change and a tuning pass on aggressive blocking against defender aggression. Alongside it: better blocker targeting and assignment execution, fixed chip and release angles, adjusted pass blocker depth on quick protections, a fix for tackle over creating unrealistic rush lanes, and play action protection now dropping to a sensible depth.

What it means for you: This was the number one complaint since launch and it sat through two patches. Your defensive line stays on its feet more often, which means edge pressure is worth calling again and four man rushes actually get home. Play action also stops collapsing on its own, so shot plays off run action become real.

Defenders Win More Jump Balls, Again

Gameplay
Tuned Aug 6

Defender behavior on jump balls and interception attempts was improved to allow higher catch points, catch tackle interactions and knockout chances got a pass in contested situations, defenders that were failing to trigger catch tackle now do, and the catch holes on accurately thrown high point bullet passes are closed.

What it means for you: This is the second patch in a row pushing the same direction. July 23 shrank the green catch window. August 6 gives the defender a better shot at the ball once you throw it anyway. Fifty fifty balls are now closer to actual fifty fifty, and throwing into coverage is a losing habit rather than a slow leak. Concept offenses that create separation keep getting better relative to jump ball offenses.

Match Coverage Got a Full Logic Pass

Defense
Fixed Aug 6

The longest list in the patch. Cover 3 Match checks fixed against four strong formations, Outside Third matching fixed in Cover 3 Blitz, Cover 3 Match Skinny check coverage gaps closed, Safety slowdown fixed in Buzz and 3 High, bracket and double team logic updated so the deep defender takes better angles, Cover 3 Match hook and curl skate rules fixed, Stubbie and Stump push logic improved in Cover 4 Palms, cornerback M.E.G. logic added in Cover 4 Quarters press alignment, and Bingo and Box check logic improved. EA also increased CPU coaching variety on coverage checks and plaster settings.

What it means for you: Match coverage was unreliable in a way that punished the people who understood it most. Calls that should have passed off correctly did not, so a lot of good defensive players fell back to spot drop zones and man. Those calls are worth trusting again. If you run a quarters or palms shell, retest your beaters this week, because the holes you were throwing into may be covered now.

Pass Rush: Stunts, Jump the Snap, and Block Shedding

Defense
Fixed Aug 6

Stunt logic and functionality improved, multiple Pirate Stunt pass protection issues fixed, defensive tackle loop behavior cleaned up so linemen stop colliding, defenders shed blocks in the proper run fit direction, and run block double team shed triggers improved. Jump the Snap got a timing feedback fix so the prompt matches the real window, a widened window for feel, and new Player Lock UI feedback when you hit it.

What it means for you: Stunts are callable again instead of a coin flip that occasionally frees a lane for nobody. Jump the Snap is worth learning now that the feedback tells you the truth about your timing. Combined with the pancake fix, this is the best patch defensive line play has had.

New Playbook Content: Zone Presets, Press Quarters, and 3-3-5 Blitzes

Playbooks
Added Aug 6

Cover 4 Zone, Cover 6 Zone and Cover 9 Zone preset plays added. Twelve new Press Quarters plays added to the Press Quarters playbook. Three new blitzes added to the 3-3-5 Odd Ghost playbook. And 4-3 Under Wide added to 4-2-5 Zone Pressure, which finally gives that playbook a base defense option.

What it means for you: Twelve new Press Quarters plays is a real content drop, not a rounding error, and it lands the same week the coverage logic behind quarters got fixed. The three new 3-3-5 Odd Ghost blitzes are worth a look for anyone already running light box pressure looks. New calls out of a playbook you already know beat learning a new playbook.

Also In This Patch: Overtime, Dynasty, Road to Glory, Ultimate Team

Modes
Aug 6

An actual rules bug got fixed: the third overtime series was being placed at the 33-yard line instead of the 3-yard line. Also fixed: players freezing after certain get-up animations, various post-play animation freezes, a safety getting stuck in Nickel 2-4 Single Mug DB Blitz, and unintended stiff arm behavior in Online Play-A-Friend.

Dynasty got the deepest mode pass: an end-of-season week summary showing budget and year-over-year changes, NIL added as a reason players leave, coach firing rebalanced so first-year head coaches are safe and high prestige coaches are harder to push out of lower prestige schools, new coordinator hiring columns (Archetype, Prestige, Pipeline, Level), a fix for being unable to withdraw or edit offers at six offers, Pro Potential now factoring roster composition and draft projections, the gameplay injury slider defaulted to 10, practice no longer healing wear and tear backwards, injuries no longer occurring in practice when injuries are off, a fix for gem recruits carrying attributes above 99, and SEC conference schedule errors after the first season fixed. Seven new coaches were added across Coastal Carolina, North Texas and Southern Miss.

Road to Glory got a new Legacy Score and Draft Projection screen, a fix for draft projection dropping after a transfer, a fix for legacy score resetting to zero after a first game on the bench, transfer portal fixes including being unable to transfer during a senior season, and a notification showing the amount when a scholarship bonus applies.

Ultimate Team introduced EVOs, a non-player item progression system. Program Pillar EVOs open August 8 for any Core player. Supercharged EVOs and Core EVOs launch August 7. Note the one-way door EA calls out: once you assign an EVO to a player item you cannot swap it to a different player.

Presentation: Lambeau Field for Wisconsin vs Notre Dame in Dynasty and Road to Glory, opponent crowd themes now selectable, 34 new crowd themes, 2,500 new commentary lines, five new mascots, five new full uniform sets, and ten new rivalry trophy celebrations.

Title Update 2.5 (July 23): The Catching Change Nobody Announced Loudly

Title Update 2.5 shipped on Thursday, July 23. The written notes are short and mostly housekeeping, but EA pushed a live content tuning pass alongside it, and that tuning is the part that actually changes how games play out.

The Green Catch Window Got Smaller

Gameplay
Tuned July 23

EA increased how much coverage defenders affect timing-based catching and shrank the green timing window as a result. Since launch you could hold aggressive catch on a covered receiver and win far more of those reps than you should have, because the green window was wide enough to forgive sloppy timing. That window is now noticeably tighter, and a defender in phase takes a real bite out of your success rate.

What it means for you: Throwing into coverage and trusting the catch animation is no longer a plan. This rewards route concepts that actually create separation over jump-ball fishing, and it quietly buffs anyone who plays real coverage. If your offense leaned on contested go balls, expect a drop in conversion until you retime your presses. Concept-based schemes get better here, which is exactly how our offensive guides are built.

Max Punt Distance Came Down

Special Teams
Tuned July 23

The maximum distance a punt can travel was reduced in the same tuning pass. Booming a 65-yard flip of the field on demand is off the table.

What it means for you: Field position is worth more than it was last week. Backed up inside your own 10, you are not punting your way out of trouble in one swing, so a stalled drive costs more. It is a small change on paper that shows up in close games.

Road to Glory: Cap Breakers Work Again

Road to Glory
Fixed July 23

Cap Breakers could not be used as intended since launch. That is fixed, along with another pass at EDGE players failing to trigger the position battles they need for depth chart movement, plus general stability and UI cleanup.

What it means for you: If you parked a Road to Glory save because your build stalled out, it is worth loading back in. This was the fix EA had promised in the previous patch notes.

Dynasty: CPU Teams Finally Spend Their NIL Money

Dynasty
Fixed July 23

CPU NIL allocation logic was improved, targeting the problem where large numbers of recruits finished the cycle unsigned because the AI never committed its money. EA also fixed the Risk of Leaving meter so it properly reflects Contract Specialist support staff.

What it means for you: Recruiting classes across the league should look closer to realistic, and your staff hires now actually read correctly when you are trying to hold on to a player. If you run long dynasties, this is the most meaningful item in the patch.

The July 16 Update: The Two Fixes Competitive Players Actually Felt

Defensive Packages Finally Survive the No-Huddle

Gameplay
Fixed July 16

Since launch, any package you subbed in reset the moment the offense went no-huddle. Tempo offenses were getting a free win: hurry to the line and the defense is suddenly back in base personnel, no dime, no dollar, no heavy front. It was one of the loudest competitive complaints in the game, and it is fixed. Your package now persists through hurry-up and no-huddle plays.

What it means for you: Package defense just got its teeth back. If you shelved sub-package schemes because no-huddle kept wiping them, bring them back now. Dollar and dime looks are safe to build a game plan around again, and tempo-heavy players lost their easiest free edge. If you want a ready-made package defense, Dubby’s Dollar DB Fire is built on exactly this personnel.

The Switch Stick Input Delay Is Gone

Gameplay
Fixed July 16

Defensive player switching has felt a step slower than CFB 26 since launch. You flick to the defender you want and the game hands him over late, which is death when you are trying to user a hook zone or play a catch point. The July 16 update fixes that delayed feel when quickly swapping between players.

What it means for you: Usering is a skill edge again instead of a coin flip. Re-train your user habits before your opponents do. The old workaround of pre-selecting your defender before the snap is no longer mandatory, but it is still a clean habit on obvious passing downs.

Also in the gameplay bucket: Coach Adjustments made in Game Settings now carry into Dynasty correctly, and EA shipped a round of general gameplay stability fixes. Nothing in the notes nerfs or buffs a specific play, formation, or scheme, so your game plan survives this patch untouched.

Dynasty: New Coach XP Speeds and a Big Recruiting Pass

The bulk of the patch is Dynasty tuning. The old XP slider is replaced with three presets, and they apply to existing Dynasties:

  • Career, 1.0x XP. The authentic long-term coach progression pace, same as the old default. This is now the default setting.
  • Simulation, 1.25x XP. The balanced middle ground.
  • Casual, 1.5x XP. The fastest ability unlocks, equivalent to CFB 26’s Faster setting.

The presets work in both Online and Offline Dynasty, and in Online Dynasty the league commissioner controls the choice.

Recruiting got a real tuning pass too:

  • CPU teams now compete harder for highly rated recruits and hold onto their own recruits better.
  • Late-cycle recruiting was tuned so fewer recruits finish the cycle without a viable offer. EA calls this a two-part fix, with the second half coming in a later update.
  • Overall recruiting balance was adjusted toward the distributions you would expect in real life, and school recruiting budgets were tuned.
  • Offseason player progression is up across the board.
  • Fixed: recruits pursued by Hawaii getting an F in Proximity to Home, and an NIL offer display bug on the transfer risk bar.

Road to Glory: The EDGE Fix

EDGE players were stuck. The position battle you need to climb the depth chart never triggered, so the depth chart never moved. The July 16 update addresses it, and EA has one more fix for the same issue planned in the next update. If your save is still stuck after the patch, EA’s own suggestion is to transfer schools to force a reset.

Also on the known-issues list: some players cannot apply Cap Breakers. That fix is slated for an upcoming title update.

What Is Still Broken

Title Update 3 cleared a large part of this list. Pancake blocking, the formation shift personnel exploit and the match coverage logic errors are all fixed as of August 6. What matters now is that EA published its own list of known issues, which is the first time this cycle we have not had to guess. These are officially under investigation and not fixed:

  • Speed boosting. Still live, still the most abused movement exploit in the game.
  • Slot defensive backs not flipping when they should. This is the defense flip bug, now officially acknowledged. Skimbo put it on film in July and it survived three patches. Full breakdown and the workarounds here.
  • Man coverage effectiveness. EA has it under review, which reads as a tuning change coming rather than a bug fix.
  • Hurry up sometimes resetting custom adjustments. The no-huddle package reset was fixed on July 16; this is the custom adjustment version of the same family and it is still here.
  • User coverage shells not always being respected. The reason your shell looks right presnap and plays wrong postsnap.
  • User hot routes not registering against specific coverage checks. Rare, but it decides games when it happens.

Still not on EA’s list and still worth knowing: the Gun Bunch “Nasty” shift that flips your bunch to the wrong side and burns play clock, coverage shells lining up differently against identical formations, and green timing catch failing to meter off chip releases.

Every one of these has a workaround that wins games right now. The full list, with the counter for each bug, is in our running CFB 27 bugs and glitches breakdown.

What Is Coming Next

Title Update 3 was the big gameplay update the community had been waiting on since launch. What EA has said is still ahead:

  • A massive roster update before Week 0 of the college football season.
  • Fixes for the six items above, all officially under investigation with no date attached.
  • Team Builder stability. EA is testing a fix for unsupported assets and uniform limits. Their guidance is worth acting on now: if your created team has more than five uniform combinations, move the five you want to keep into the first five slots before the fix ships.
  • ACC practice uniforms, after the Big 12 set that shipped in this update.

CFB 27 Patch Notes: FAQ

What did CFB 27 Title Update 3 change?

Title Update 3 released August 6, 2026 and is the largest patch of the cycle. The competitive headlines: the Untarget User Defender coaching adjustment no longer works on run plays, the formation shift exploit that produced four and five receiver sets out of heavy personnel is closed, pancake block frequency was reduced, defenders win more contested catches and jump balls, and match coverage received a full logic pass across Cover 3 Match, Cover 4 Palms and Cover 4 Quarters. It also added Cover 4, Cover 6 and Cover 9 zone presets, twelve new Press Quarters plays, three new 3-3-5 Odd Ghost blitzes, and 4-3 Under Wide to 4-2-5 Zone Pressure. Dynasty, Road to Glory and Ultimate Team all got substantial passes, and Ultimate Team introduced EVOs.

Does untargeting still work in CFB 27?

Only on pass plays. As of the August 6 title update the Untarget User Defender coaching adjustment no longer applies on run plays, and it no longer carries over when you are controlling a defensive lineman. EA also fixed untargeting failing to work with blitz shows. If your defense relied on untargeting your user against the run, that edge is gone and you have to fit the run honestly.

Did CFB 27 fix pancake blocking?

Yes, in the August 6 title update. EA reduced pancake block frequency through a coaching adjustment change and tuned the interaction between aggressive blocking and defender aggression. It had been the top community complaint since launch and survived the July 16 and July 23 patches before this one addressed it.

Is speed boosting fixed in CFB 27?

No. Speed boosting is on EA’s official under-investigation list published with the August 6 title update, alongside slot defensive backs not flipping, man coverage effectiveness, hurry up resetting custom adjustments, user coverage shells not being respected, and user hot routes not registering against specific coverage checks. None of those six are fixed and none have a date.

What did CFB 27 Title Update 2.5 change?

Title Update 2.5 released July 23, 2026. Alongside it EA pushed a tuning pass that increased how much coverage defenders affect timing-based catching, shrinking the green catch window, and reduced maximum punt distance. The written notes fixed Road to Glory Cap Breakers, another pass at EDGE position battles, CPU NIL allocation in Dynasty so fewer recruits go unsigned, and the Risk of Leaving meter reflecting Contract Specialist staff.

Did CFB 27 nerf aggressive catching?

Effectively yes. The July 23 tuning pass gave coverage defenders more impact on timing-based catches and made the green timing window smaller, so contested and aggressive catches convert less often than they did at launch. Timing has to be more precise now.

What did the CFB 27 July 16 title update change?

The first title update focused on Dynasty and recruiting: three new Coach XP speed presets (Career at 1.0x, Simulation at 1.25x, Casual at 1.5x), a recruiting tuning pass, higher offseason progression, and the Road to Glory EDGE position battle fix. Gameplay got two meaningful fixes: defensive packages no longer reset against no-huddle, and the switch stick input delay is gone.

Did the update fix defensive packages resetting on no-huddle?

Yes. Packages now persist when the offense runs hurry-up or no-huddle, so sub-package defense like dime and dollar is reliable again in competitive play.

Is the switch stick delay fixed in CFB 27?

Yes. The July 16 title update fixed the delayed feel when quickly swapping between defenders, which had made usering noticeably harder than in CFB 26.

When is the next CFB 27 update?

EA said a gameplay-focused title update is targeted for the week after the July 16 patch. Part two of the late-cycle recruiting fix, part two of the EDGE position battle fix, and the Road to Glory Cap Breaker fix are also coming in future updates.

Did the July 16 update nerf any plays or schemes?

No. The notes list no play, formation, or scheme nerfs. The competitive impact comes from the no-huddle package fix and the switch stick fix, which strengthen package defense and usering rather than changing any specific play.

Last updated: August 6, 2026, the day Title Update 3 shipped. We update this page as every CFB 27 patch drops.
