Macros are the biggest change to competitive College Football in years, and most players are already building them wrong. If you have heard people talking about macros in CFB 27 and wondered what the hype is about, here it is: EA finally gave you a way to save your entire defensive setup, or your whole protection scheme, and fire it with one tap at the line. What used to take 15 to 20 button presses now takes two. This article covers everything: what macros are, how to build them, every setting hiding underneath, and how to turn them from a menu feature into wins.

What Macros Actually Are

The official name is Custom Adjustments, and they live in the new Create and Share menu. The community just calls them macros, and the name fits. A macro is a named package of adjustments you build once in the main menu and then call in-game with a couple of clicks.

One package can bundle defensive fronts, coverage shells, individual player assignments, pass protection, pressure looks, hot routes, and route concepts into a single named setup. In a game, you press L1 on PlayStation or LB on Xbox at the line, pick the package, and everything applies at once.

The numbers you need to know:

  • You can build up to 20 macros on offense and 20 on defense (40 total saved)
  • You can bring 10 offensive and 10 defensive macros into a game
  • They fire from the line with L1 / LB, no digging through menus mid-play-clock

If you have ever lost to a no-huddle offense because you could not get your shell, your contain, and your DB depth set before the snap, you already understand why this matters. The no-huddle defense problem that has haunted this series for a decade finally has a real answer.

How to Build Your First Macro

Setup is simple, and you do it from the main menu, not mid-game:

  1. Go to Create and Share from the main menu
  2. Open Custom Adjustments
  3. Choose offense or defense and build your package: pick the adjustments, assignments, and settings you want bundled
  4. Name it something you will recognize under pressure (“BLITZ ANSWER” beats “Package 3”)
  5. Save it, then select which packages are active for your next game
  6. In-game, press L1 / LB at the line and tap the package you need

That last step is the whole feature. Two clicks and your quarterback contain is set, your DBs are at the depth you want, and your line is shifted. Your opponent is still mashing buttons.

The Settings Layer Nobody Is Talking About

Macros get the headlines, but the coverage controls underneath them are the bigger competitive story. CFB 27 massively expanded what you can actually adjust, and macros are how you deploy all of it fast:

  • Cornerback depth and width, set exactly where your corners sit instead of living with defaults
  • Safety depth, width, and midpoint control, so your shell disguises actually hold up
  • Nine Smart Zone behaviors, from Aggressive all the way to Ultra Conservative, plus Plaster, Focus, and Look For Work
  • Match checks: Box, Stress, Solo, and Skate for handling different route distributions
  • Man answers against stacks and bunches: Combo, Triangle, Top Hat, and Lock

Every one of those settings can live inside a macro. That is the real power move: a package is not just “pinch the line and blitz.” It is your entire answer to a specific problem, tuned down to how your safety plays the midpoint, saved under one name.

Build Answers, Not Collections

Here is where most players will get it wrong. They will fill all 20 slots with random setups, freeze at the line trying to remember what “Package 7” does, and quit on the feature by week three.

The players who win with macros will build them the way our tournament players build their schemes: start with the problem, then build the answer.

  • Opponent blitzing every down? Build a pressure answer: slide protection, hot routes ready, back kept in.
  • Opponent sitting in soft zone? Build your zone beater package.
  • Press man on the outside? Build the man beater with your release-winning routes set.
  • Mobile quarterback running wild? One tap: contain package, spies and edges set.
  • Screens and quick game eating you alive? Build the flat-lockdown package.

Ten active slots is not a limitation. It is a discipline. If you cannot name the problem a package solves, it does not deserve a slot.

What Macros Will Not Do for You

A macro fires your setup. It does not tell you when to fire it.

Macros do not read two-high versus one-high for you. They do not recognize that the nub-side corner is about to get picked, or that your opponent has called the same dig concept three drives in a row. The player who taps the right package at the right moment beats the player with prettier packages every single time.

That is the part that has not changed since 2014: setups are downloadable, reads are earned. Macros just raised the ceiling on how fast a prepared player can play. Which means the gap between players who know what they are looking at and players who are guessing is about to get wider, not smaller.

How This Connects to Our Guides

This is exactly how we build guides at MaddenTurf. Every scheme our creators ship is already organized the macro way: here is the problem, here is the setup, here is when to call it. Elitee’s Charlotte Bunch offense dropped day one of CFB 27 built on that exact structure, and our CFB 27 guides going forward will include the macro packages behind each scheme, named and ready to build, so you are not reverse-engineering a video at 11pm before a ranked session.

The CFB 27 hub is where every new guide lands first.

Madden 27 Gets the Same System

One more reason to learn this now: Madden 27 ships August 13 with the same Custom Adjustments system. Every macro-building habit you develop in CFB 27 transfers straight over. The players who show up to Madden 27 launch already fluent in packages will be weeks ahead of everyone opening the menu for the first time.

Macro Questions We Keep Getting

Can I share my macros or download someone else’s?

The menu is called Create and Share, and sharing setups is what everyone is asking about. As of launch week you build your own packages. We are testing what sharing actually allows and will update this article as it firms up.

Do macros work in every mode?

Custom Adjustments are built for head-to-head play, and that is where they decide games: ranked, online dynasty matchups, and tournament play.

Are macros cheating?

No. Everyone has the same 10 slots. Macros do not do anything you could not do manually before, they just do it in two clicks instead of twenty. The skill moved from finger speed to preparation, which rewards players who put the work in before the game starts.

How many macros should I actually run?

Start with four or five real answers you know cold, not ten you half-remember. Add packages as opponents show you problems you do not have an answer for yet.

The Bottom Line

Macros are the new competitive baseline. By August, every serious player will have a loadout, and playing without one will feel like playing without audibles. The edge is not having macros. The edge is having the right ten, knowing exactly when to fire each one, and updating them as the meta moves.

That second part is what we do. MaddenTurf has been the home of competitive Madden and College Football strategy since 2014: five pro creators, five Madden Belts, over $1M in combined winnings, and 8,700+ members who would rather learn the answer than guess at it. Join the membership and get every CFB 27 scheme, macro loadout, and meta update as they drop.

Heads up for CFB 27: at launch, some defensive macros are dropping adjustments and coverage shells are misaligning. See our running list of CFB 27 bugs and glitches, and the workarounds that still win.
