MUT 26 Tips for Beginners: Build Your Team Without Spending Money

By Route Combo | March 25, 2026

Madden Ultimate Team is the most played mode in Madden and the most expensive if you do it wrong. This guide shows you how to build a competitive MUT 26 team without dropping real money.

Solo Challenges First

Before you touch Head to Head, grind the solo challenges. They are boring. Nobody wants to hear that. But they hand you free packs, coins, and player cards that jump start your team faster than anything else in the game.

The weekly solo challenges refresh every Tuesday. Do them the day they drop. The rewards are better early in the week and the competition for auction house prices is lower.

The Auction House Is Where You Make Money

Forget opening packs to build your team. The auction house is how smart MUT players operate. Buy low, sell high. It sounds simple because it is.

Here is the pattern: prices drop on Saturday when everyone opens their weekend packs. That is when you buy. Prices go back up Tuesday through Thursday when the supply dries up. That is when you sell.

Start by flipping silver and gold cards. The margins are small but consistent. Once you build up 50K to 100K in coins, move to flipping elite cards where the margins are bigger.

Budget Players That Compete

You do not need a 99 overall squad to win games. Some of the best cards in MUT 26 cost under 20K coins. Speed kills in this game. A fast corner with 90 speed will lock down receivers that cost ten times as much.

Focus your coins on three positions: quarterback, one fast receiver, and a user linebacker or safety. Everything else can be budget until you build your coin stack.

Pack Strategy

Do not buy packs with coins. Ever. The odds are terrible and you are burning coins you could use on guaranteed players from the auction house.

Open the free packs from solos and challenges. If EA gives you a free pack, open it. If you have to spend coins to open a pack, the answer is no. Put those coins into the auction house instead.

The one exception: store packs during promos. When Most Feared, Zero Chill, or Playoffs drop, the promo packs have better pull rates. Save your free packs for those windows.

When to Sell and When to Hold

Every card in MUT loses value over time. New cards come out every week and push old ones down. If you pull a great card and you are not going to use it, sell it immediately. Today is always the most expensive that card will ever be.

The exception is power up cards and training. Training value tends to hold steady or increase during certain promos. Pay attention to the training market if you are running a power up heavy scheme.

H2H Tips for MUT

Online MUT is a different game than solos. People run meta plays, cheese blitzes, and exploit every weakness in your scheme. Here is how to survive:

Pick one offensive formation and learn it completely. Know every route, every hot route option, every audible. Depth in one formation beats shallow knowledge of ten formations.

On defense, learn to user a middle linebacker or safety. Sit in the middle of the field and read the quarterback. Do not chase. Let the play come to you. One user pick per game changes the entire momentum.

If someone is running the same play over and over and you cannot stop it, do not rage quit. Go to practice mode after the game, set up that exact play, and find the adjustment that beats it. Next time you see it, you will be ready.
