Three Formations, One Offense
Dubby's whole Georgia Southern attack runs through three formations. Learn the roles once and every concept below makes sense.
  • Y Trips (in-game: Y Trio Off Week) is the cornerstone. The tight end and running back can block blitzes from either side while the receivers run the read concepts below, Sticking Up is the signature play out of it.
  • Gun Normal Y Off Close is the change-up formation. It carries Y Sail, the most fundamental play in the guide, plus a Mesh Spot answer.
  • A two-tight-end Slot Offset package is the red zone formation. It carries the RPO Read Bubble triple option below.
  • Formation Shifts (right after the intro video, in Mechanics) let you flip into any of these three without tipping your hand pre-snap.

Medium
Mechanic
Set Up
  1. 1At the play call screen, flick the right stick to the bottom right to shift formations.
  2. 2Come out in a formation with the passing strength (slot receiver) on the opposite side from the play you actually want to run, Dubby's go-to is starting from Gun Normal Y Off Close to shift into Y Trips (Y Trio Off Week), or the reverse.
  3. 3Hit A once: the formation shifts into your real play. Hit A again to snap.
  4. 4Hot route freely in the window between the two A presses, the defense has to flip and react before they even see your real play.
  5. 5Mix in straight, non-shifted snaps every so often so the defense can't key on the shift itself.
Adjustments
  • Especially effective against Double Mug and any Mike/Nickel blitz look, since the defense has to physically re-flip instead of adjusting automatically.
  • Works from any personnel package as long as the shift flips the passing strength.

Medium Mechanic
Set Up
  1. 1Best on a streak or fade to your tallest receiver, aim for about 20 yards downfield.
  2. 2Throw the ball, then immediately hold the left stick down and to the left as if you're dropping the receiver back, and keep holding it.
  3. 3Hold the catch button (Y) the entire time, Dubby plays with the hold-to-catch setting on.
  4. 4Holding down-left turns your receiver back into the throw so he attacks the ball at its highest point instead of running under it.
  5. 5The taller the receiver, the bigger your margin for error, 6'3" and up is ideal, but it works with anyone.
Adjustments
  • Turning the receiver around too early is the only real interception risk, keep holding the stick until the ball actually arrives.
  • Works on corner routes too, not just streaks and fades, same down-left hold technique.

Medium
Everything Beater
Set Up
  1. 1Dubby uploaded this as one continuous breakdown instead of splitting it by play, so this single video covers every core concept out of Y Trips (Y Trio Off Week), watch the whole thing.
  2. 2STICKING UP, the cornerstone play: hot route the tight end to a drag or slant left. Read order: running back in the flat first, then the slant if he's overplayed, then the post last, one of the few routes that beats man and still leaves a zone void. Under pressure, drag the tight end and keep the running back in to block.
  3. 3FLOOD POST, same formation, different concept: hot route the tight end to an out route (faster than the stock wheel), put the running back on an in route for a quick tight end-to-running back read underneath. Against man or match, the backside dig/post over the middle is the answer once the underneath routes get taken away.
  4. 4HALF BACK CIRCLE is the same Flood Post read with a slightly faster tight end route, use whichever the defense gives up more easily.
Adjustments
  • This is the cornerstone formation of the whole guide, the post route out of Sticking Up is the reason to run Y Trips at all.
  • The whip route shows up in more than one of these plays' progressions but is much slower this year than in past versions, don't rely on it as your first read.

Y Sail Setup

Y SailGun Normal Y Off Close, the fundamental play
Easy
Everything Beater
Set Up
  1. 1Call Y Sail from Gun Normal Y Off Close.
  2. 2Stem the corner route: hot route stem (Y), hold LB, then move the left stick to shorten the route, the shorter you make it, the faster it develops and the easier the throw.
  3. 3Read order: the running back first, then the drag, then the backside dig (this one beats man most of the time), then the tight end corner last since it's the toughest throw.
  4. 4Against Cover 2 or similar zone, the running back and drag combo is on time almost every snap.
Adjustments
  • Mesh Spot is the change-up out of this same formation: cross two drags underneath with a crosser over the top. If both drags are covered, the crosser is open behind them, it hits fast because of the tight split.
  • The deep corner/fade shot is there but this year's QBs don't drive the ball deep well, treat Y Sail as a short-to-intermediate play, not a bomb.

Spot Y Seam Setup
🔒Play Art LockedUnlock for $15
Spot Y SeamDubby's favorite play in the game
Medium
Match Beater
Set Up
  1. 1Call Spot Y Seam. It has a stemmed-up slant (in between a normal slant and Sticking Up), an inside fade down the seam, and a slot fade shared with Y Sail.
  2. 2Hot route the tight end to a corner route, this is the main man-beater in the concept.
  3. 3Put your fastest, tallest receiver on the fade (takeoff trait if you have it), it can be finished as a bomb, a rocket catch, or anything in between.
  4. 4Against match coverages (Quarters, Palms, Cover 6), leave the running back on his stock route rather than a crossing route, pulling him off the crossing route is what keeps the safety honest and opens the tight end corner or the fade one-on-one.
  5. 5Against straight man, look for the tight end corner first; against zone, the seam fade holds up the middle defender and opens underneath.
Adjustments
  • This is also the Formation Shifts' go-to target play (see Mechanics), shift into it to flip which side the fade/seam lives on before the defense can adjust.
  • If the underneath drag doesn't come open, don't force it, the fade and tight end corner are the real answers here.

Red Zone
Set Up
  1. 1Call RPO Read Bubble out of the two-tight-end Slot Offset red zone package. Dubby also formation-shifts into this one often.
  2. 2It's a triple option: hand off to the running back, quick hot-routed pass to X, bubble screen, or the quarterback keeps it.
  3. 3First key is the R defender: if he chases the quarterback, hold A and keep the ball, with a mobile quarterback this is a walk-in score.
  4. 4If the R defender sits, you still have it. Second key is the P defender, who guards the pitch: if he crashes down, throw the bubble, it only takes 3 defenders to actually cover it and most red zone looks don't have them there; if he stays home on the bubble, keep the ball or hand it off.
  5. 5The hand off to the running back is always live underneath if both perimeter reads are taken away.
Adjustments
  • This is a read play, not a guess-and-hope, whichever way each key defender commits, the opposite option is open by design.

Beating Double Mug Setup

Beating Double Mugvs Double A-Gap Blitz (meta defense #1)
Medium
Blitz Beater
Set Up
  1. 1Double Mug (double A-gap) is the #1 defense you'll see online, this is the most important section in the guide.
  2. 2Check protection first: any blocker flashing the orange fire icon is unblocked. Half-slide the line toward the free rusher and put the running back on a check-release (blocks if he blitzes, releases on his route if he doesn't).
  3. 3Dubby's favorite answer: block the tight end on the free rusher instead of the running back, then release the running back on a wheel route, the defense has to respect the flat first, so the wheel comes open over the top for a lob.
  4. 4With the running back out on the wheel, their spy/user is forced onto him, which leaves the short cross or X open underneath, take whichever one their user vacates.
  5. 5If they bring extra pressure before you can find the wheel, get the ball out fast on the short cross, it's the reliable answer against man-blitz looks.
Adjustments
  • Formation-shifting into this look first (see Mechanics) makes the blitz have to re-set instead of firing automatically.
  • Watch the defender who was matched on the tight end once you release him on the wheel, if that defender bails deep instead of spying, the tight end's old area is wide open too.

🔒Play Art LockedUnlock for $15
Beating 2-Man Undervs 2-Man Under (meta defense #2)
Medium
Man Beater
Set Up
  1. 12-Man Under is the other defense you'll see constantly online. It has built-in press at the line, but nobody spies the quarterback except the safeties at first.
  2. 2Put the running back on an in-route (not a flat, a flat isn't a real man-beater here) and lean on the tight end slant, which is still lethal against man.
  3. 3Scramble with the quarterback whenever the pocket clears. As soon as you start running, the defense has to commit a safety to spy, that's the whole point.
  4. 4Once a safety commits to spy, you're down to a true 2-man rush up front, which buys the underneath routes more time to develop.
  5. 5If they start cheating their safeties to stop the scramble/spy game, switch to wheel routes (tight end or running back), the safety rotation opens the sideline behind it.
Adjustments
  • Against off coverage instead of press, everything above hits even easier, press is the harder version of this look.
  • Sticking Up and Flood Post (Core Concepts above) are also strong picks here, same running-back/tight-end-first, scramble-with-the-QB approach applies to both.
