Why We Formation Shift Into Everything
This is the mechanic the whole guide sits on, and it is the first thing you do on every snap. You come out in Pistol Trips, you call the play you actually want out of Bunch X Nasty, and you shift on the way to the line. Skimbo does it on every single rep on purpose.
  • Come out in Pistol Trips. Call the play you want, for example Clear X Dig.
  • Look at the bottom right of the screen. Flick the right stick LEFT until it reads Pistol Trips, and the shift is running.
  • Reason one: it messes up the defense. They aligned to one look and now they are chasing a different one.
  • Reason two, and this is the bigger one: you can do UNLIMITED hot routes while the shift is happening, then hit X and snap it immediately. Any combo you want, no time lost.
  • Because you snap out of the shift, your opponent never gets a clean look at your final route combination.
  • You do not have to shift. If you come out and see a light box or a look you like, hit Square to audible and just run it out of Pistol Trips instead.
  • Every play card in this guide assumes you have shifted in. Always be on a hash before you snap.

  1. 1Come out in Pistol Trips and hit Square to audible. Skimbo only ever calls three things from here: HB Dive, HB Zone Weak, and the RPO.
  2. 2HB Zone Weak is his favorite. He likes the blocking out of it and it is the home run hitting call, especially run to the left.
  3. 3HB Dive is the call when you just want guaranteed yards. Four or five every time, take it and get down.
  4. 4The RPO is only worth calling when you already know they are in man coverage. Against zone, leave it alone.
  5. 5On the RPO against man, UNTARGET the receiver on the far outside before you snap. This is the whole trick.
  6. 6Why it works: that receiver's corner is in man on him, so when you untarget him, the receiver goes to block the defender covering YOUR runner. The corner follows him all the way inside and takes himself out of the play.
  7. 7If you do not untarget, that same corner sits right there and makes the tackle. Watch the two reps back to back in the video and the blocking difference is obvious.
  8. 8PA Dagger is in the menu. Skimbo never calls it. If you want to throw, shift into Bunch X Nasty instead.
Adjustments
  • This is your bailout. If you shift into a bunch look and hate what you see, you can always back out and just run HB Zone Weak.
  • Once you have formation shifted into Bunch so many times, opponents start selling out on it. That is exactly when the run gets easy.
  • Only untarget in man. Against zone that receiver has nobody to chase inside and you are just playing 10 on 11.
  • There are other plays in Pistol Trips worth a look, but these three are the ones Skimbo actually calls.

What playbook and formations is this?
The Washington State playbook. You live in two looks: Pistol Trips as your base, and Gun Bunch X Nasty as the passing formation you formation shift into. Learn the shift and the two menus and you have the whole scheme.
Do I have to formation shift on every play?
No, but Skimbo does. It scrambles their alignment and it lets you hot route as much as you want and then quick snap before they can react. If you come out and see a look you like, you can always just audible and run it out of Pistol Trips.
Is this the same as the other Washington State guides on the site?
No. This is Skimbo's own scheme, filmed fresh for CFB 27, with his formations, his hot routes, and his reads. There are two other Washington State offensive guides on MaddenTurf and each one is a different creator's take on the playbook. They stack. If you already own one, this gives you a second set of answers out of the same book.
What if my opponent runs match coverage?
There is a card for exactly that. Skimbo's answer is a one-line setup: slant the tight end. Match coverage does not pick him up, and it goes for 20 to 30 yards regularly. Divide X Whip In is also built so a lurking user cannot take away your read.
